Havana is a major commercial and cultural city and leading port in Cuba.  During Prohibition, when alcohol became illegal in the United States, peopled flocked to Havana in search of excellent rum and Cuba’s famous cigars.  The economy in Cuba was thriving and reaping all the benefits possible due to Prohibition.  This thriving economy was short-lived when Fidel Castro came into power on January 31, 1959.  He proclaimed prostitution, gambling, and other festivities where locals made money by tourism would end and be replaced by common jobs!

Since the passing of recent laws, private businesses, farmers, and other tourist-friendly operations opened their doors in Havana and quickly started regaining tourist dollars.   This has made Havana the first-class capital in Cuba.  Havana offers many nightclubs, fine dining, and a Cuban culture that draws tourists to their fair city every year.

Havana’s Climate

When you arrive in Havana, you will be greeted with high humidity and enormous heat that will engulf you in a searing embrace. The climate remains the same all year round and at any given hour of day or night.  With the exception of occasional rain storms and cool winds, the temperature hovers between 77 and 81 degrees.  During the winter months, the temperature can fall as low as 68 degrees which is a welcomed relief from the daytime devastating heat.

The Peak Season For Flying To Havana

The best time to get an inexpensive flight to Havana is between winter and spring.  You will experience the cooler end of the spectrum of temperatures and will not hit the hurricane season.  The most popular and expensive time to travel to Havana is the beginning of the new year. You can be a little more selective with your flights if you travel during the off-peak season which is between August and October.  This is also the wettest time of year so finding inexpensive flights will be easier than during the spring season.

How To Get Around

You should choose their shuttle or tour buses that cater to tourists because their regular bus service is extremely unreliable.  You might want to grab their tractor-pulled car which is called a camel but should not be mistaken for the four-legged, hump-backed desert animal!  This service will take you all around the city but is best for the adventurous traveler!  You may also look for tourist taxis around the hotels, transportation centers, and popular sightseeing spots.

Havana taxis charge in US dollars and are quite affordable.  Keep in mind, freelance taxis are illegal and even though tourists will never be fined, these drivers will not drop you off in front of your hotel.  It’s also a good idea to know exactly what your charge will be before getting into a taxi.  Another great avenue is to walk around the city, taking in its rich culture, especially in La Habana Vejia.   You can also opt for a two-seater horse-drawn carriage.  Taxis and antique cars will also get you to your chosen destination.
